BMW's S1000R super naked is getting updated alongside the BMW S1000 RR superbike and S1000XR sport tourer for 2017, adding a whole host of updates to keep it competitive in the growing super naked/sport naked category.
First, the engine has been re-tuned to meet Euro4 compliance, and yet it somehow gains five horsepower in the process to bring the total to 165. The intake has also been revised for better airflow and more intake noise. Like the S1000XR, it also gets a new "vibration free" handlebar, as well as new titanium exhaust silencer.
Then, the tech package gets a bump, with cornering ABS (BMW calls it ABS Pro) and an up/down quickshifter as options. The instrument panel has been revised to give it better readability and will now display ambient temperature information, and the fairing has been adapted a little bit to show more of the engine near the radiator.
Finally, a slightly lighter main frame reduces weight by 6.6 pounds to a total of 452 pounds. BMW claim the new frame offers improvements in rigidity, mechanical grip, and flex.
As we've stated elsewhere, cornering ABS is the most important advancement to hit motorcycling in decades as it keeps the rider from low siding while braking at lean, an incredibly common accident for riders. This technology was first introduced on only the fastest and most expensive superbikes, and it's incredible to see this tech continue to trickle down into other segments.
